Plats, deeds, and property information: choosing a starting point

Different questions call for different records. A recorded deed concerns a property transfer; a plat can help identify a subdivision or recorded layout. Neither substitutes for a current boundary survey.

Searching for a plat

The state search menu includes plat, survey, and subdivision search options. Gather the subdivision name, plat number, survey reference, or legal description before starting.

Assessment and tax questions

Recorded-document searches and local assessment or tax systems serve different purposes. If your question concerns a tax bill or assessed value, identify the responsible local authority rather than assuming the Recorder’s Office maintains that information.

Save the reference

Record the document or plat identifier and where you found it. Confirm current copying options and any charges with the official provider before ordering.
